Character Basis
Edit
Fei Long is a tribute to the Kung Fu movie legend Bruce Lee. Fei Long also lets out similar battle cries as Lee, and is just as furious and fast a fighter. Also, feilong is Chinese (specifically Cantonese, Hong Kong's primary dialect) for "flying dragon", as well as a type of kick; Bruce Lee's Chinese screen name was 李 小龍 (Lee Siu-Long) or "little dragon." Fei Long's alternate costume in Street Fighter IV is inspired by Lee's look from Enter The Dragon (black shorts, scratches on the chest and face, etc.). Fei Long was one of the first Bruce Lee look-alike characters in fighting games, leading to characters such as Marshall Law and his son Forrest Law from the Tekken series, Li Long and Maxi from the Soul series and Jann Lee from the Dead or Alive series.
Story
Edit
A youthful and talented action movie star, Fei Long is the master of Hitenryu Kung Fu. While he fought on the streets to sharpen his skills, he caught the eye of a movie director, who got him into the big times and made him an international sensation. He also attracted the attention of the criminal organization Shadaloo, which tried to recruit him by force.
He made a string of action movies, until he participated in the second World Warrior tournament. He realized that he preferred the real thing to the staged, choreographed fight scenes in movies, and gave up his career and disappeared into the streets.
Personality
Edit
Fei Long is serious most of the time. He is also shown to be calm at times. The best example of this is in his rival fight against Abel, where he is shown to be in a normal mood at first, but all of a sudden loses his temper just as the Frenchman repeatedly asks him for a fight. There are also times when Fei Long is shown to be a little cocky. This can be seen in many of his personal actions and win quotes against certain characters. He is full of fighting spirit in a lot of his win quotes, and takes great pride in his fighting style which he seeks to honor in all ways possible. He despises all that is evil. Fei Long also enjoys a good match. Although he is a famous martial arts movie actor, he still takes his time to appear at underground fighting areas to find a worthy opponent to spar with.
Notes
Edit
In Fei Long's ending in Super SF II and Super SF II Turbo, a movie director approaches Fei Long and tries to convince him into returning to make one more movie, but Fei Long refuses. In the English version, he says that "there could never be another legend like the great one and his son", which has been interpreted by many fans to mean Bruce Lee and his son Brandon, who died shortly before Super Street Fighter II was released. This reference is not present in the Japanese version.
The background of Fei Long's fighting venue is based on the Tiger Balm Garden in Hong Kong. In Street Fighter Alpha 3, his stage is set in Kowloon Park.
He and Dee Jay are good friends, and have a special pre-match intro with each other.
He appears in Dan Hibiki's Street Fighter Alpha 2 stage, standing in the background observing the fight.
Aside from cameo appearances in some stages in Super Gem Fighter: Mini Mix, he also appears in Felicia's ending.
He makes a cameo in Capcom Fighting Evolution, at the nighttime observation deck stage.
