DarkStalkers Marionette Tribute Art

"Under The Spell of Marionette", by Jason Cardy

Marionette is a secret character from the Darkstalkers series of fighting games. She first appeared in Vampire Hunter 2.

Biography[]

Marionette is a wind up toy-like puppet creature, resembling a woman with ball jointed doll qualities in a leaf-like dress that looks similar to a ballerina outfit, jester hat, and heels with short hair and a wind up key on her back. It is said that an evil phantom, Shadow, made a young woman his slave, turning her into a puppet in order to fulfill his task.

Marionette's powers are like some sort of a mirror. She possesses a copy of a body, lying on the ground, that looks like her opponent. As she lowers herself into the body, the strings disappear and the body becomes animate. This grants her the ability to know every power, weakness, and secret of her opponent.

Trivia[]

  • While she may be incorrectly cited as having the supposedly different name of “Marionetto” in Japanese, the English word marionette is pronounced as “marionetto” in Japanese and is simply a difference in pronunciation and not a difference in name localization.
  • On the "Score Ranking" screen in Vampire Savior, Vampire Savior 2/Vampire Hunter 2 and Vampire Chronicle, Marionette only shows up as a "?" because she appears as a secret character.
  • Marionette's winning themes in Vampire Savior 2, Vampire Hunter 2 and Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower are essentially the same but use different instruments depending on the version of the game.
  • In the PlayStation version of Darkstalkers 3, Marionette's intro music sounds a little different than in the original version.
  • Marionette appeared in SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighting DS as a card.
  • She appears to be a fusion of both the Living/Sentient Toy and Monster Clown tropes, as she is a wind-up doll puppet dressed as a jester.
  • In some concept art for Anita, one of the dolls she would control looks similar to Marionette, as it dressed in a ballerina-like outfit and often having closed eyes. It had some differences as well such as being more like a stuffed mannequin with stitching rather than a plastic looking puppet and a tiara instead of a jester hat, which is a bit similar to one of Lilith’s strictly conceptual designs.
