Ginzu the Ninja, known as Sho ( Shō?) in Japan and going by the codename Ninja Commando on the character select screen, is a character from the beat 'em up game Captain Commando.

Story[]

Ginzu is a member of the Commando Team and a highly trained ninja, successor to Bushin-ryu Ninpo (武神流忍術?)[1][2], a fictional ninjutsu style which first debuted in Final Fight. He is the son of Gou, Guy's student and 40th (current) Grandmaster of Bushinryu[3][4]. He and Captain Commando are childhood friends, having know each other back when they were 12 and 10 years old respectively, and his father served Commando's parents as a bodyguard[3]. Following the rise of Scumocide's Super Criminals, Ginzu joins his friend as a member of the Commando Team[5]. Opposing him stands his rival Yamato, an opponent of the Bushin-ryu who has associated himself and his ninja clan with Scumocide.[3].

Typical of the ninja archetype, Ginzu is stern and stoic, always having a serious face and speaking in a highly formal yet outdated manner. He is fully dedicated to his ninja training and is always on the look out for thrilling opponents to fight against.

Powers and Abilities[]

Equipment[]

Ginzu is equipped for battle with the following:

  • Servant Sword "Lightning Light" (愛刀「雷光丸」 Ai-gatana `Raikōmaru'?): A powerful katana that only serves Ginzu, it can cut things at an atomic level.
  • Ninja Suit (くろしょうぞく Kuro-shouzoku?): His dark purple ninja uniform, it's tougher than iron, yet softer than silk.
  • Ninja Eye (ニンジャ アイ Ninja Ai?): His eyes are highly trained and can pick out enemies at 500 meters ahead in pitch dark.

Fighting Techniques[]

Ginzu use his highly-trained martial skills and agility in battle, and his katana "Lightning Light" is razor-sharp and capable of cutting an opponent in two with one stroke. His Special Move is Smoke Bomb (スモークボム Sumōku Bomu?), a sure-killing technique. After creating a smoke screen around his body, the smoke explodes, killing enemies that are adjacent. His Dash Attacks are Iaizuki (居合い突き Iai-zuki?, roughly "iai thrust") and Flying Katana (上段ジャンプ斬り Jōdan Janpu-giri?, roughly "Upper Tier Jump Slash"). Iaizuki pierces several enemies at once. Flying Katana cuts the enemies from above while jumping. Ginzu can also grab his opponents and either kick their stomachs or do a shoulder or overhead throw.

In the Marvel vs. Capcom series, he can be summoned by Captain Commando to perform a descending sword slash in front of him, and he combines with the other members of the team to perform Captain Commando's Hyper Combos "Captain Sword" and "Captain Storm". In Namco × Capcom, Ginzu uses the Smoke Bomb and Iaizuki as normal attacks, and joins Guy in the Special Move Bushin Musou Renka (武神無双連刈?), a multi-hit super move first seen as Guy's Super Combo in Street Fighter Alpha. He also appears with the rest of the team (and Guy) for Commando's Captain Sword and Captain Storm Multiple Assaults.

Ginzu also has a named technique in the manga, Supreme Moon Wolf Lightning Strike (雷斬狼月覇 Raizan Ōkami Tsukiha?), a lightning-fast running sword strike. It appears to be non-lethal as well, as Ginzu used it to knock out Yamato in their duel without killing him.

Manga appearance[]

In the Captain Commando manga, Ginzu is given the full name Ginzu Takegami (武神翔 Takegami Shō?), with "Takegami" being a different reading of the same Kanji for "Bushin". Ginzu has left Japan on a training journey for the last 6 years, walking the lands and taking jobs as a hired mercenary in order to find interesting opponents to fight. He's introduced when the Basia sisters Carol and Brenda hire him to eliminate Captain Commando. Ginzu confronts the Captain, but as soon as he realizes he is his childhood friend Mars, Ginzu stop the fight and refuses to carry out the hit. Later on his sister Akane appears searching for him, and ends up being captured by his rival Yamato, in an attempt to force Ginzu into fighting him. Ginzu follows through, defeats him and saves Akane, but refuses to finish him much to Yamato's disappointment.

Ginzu is initially not a part of the Commando Team and is reluctant to get involved as he doesn't believe in notions like "good or evil" and is just simply focused on his training and fighting strong opponents regardless of affinity. He eventually comes around after seeing that they are attracting people that could give him a good fight. The manga also establishes that Ginzu's katana Lightning Light was created by Captain Commando's father, Dr. Alexander.

Other appearances[]

  • Ginzu (alongside Captain Commando and the stage enemy Carol) appears in the background of Ken's stage from Street Fighter Alpha 2, attending a birthday party for Ken's then-girlfriend Eliza. Ginzu can be seen standing next to Eliza and the Captain, wearing his full ninja uniform.
  • Ginzu appears as a playable pair unit in Namco X Capcom, working together with Guy from Final Fight, as both are practitioners of Bushinryu.

Trivia[]

  • His English name, Ginzu, comes from the Ginsu kitchen knives which were introduced in the 1970's and were made famous later by its TV advertising campaign, where they were said and shown to cut through most anything, even tin cans. This explains why his signature line is "I'll slice 'em! I'll dice 'em!" in some versions of the arcade game.
  • His Japanese name, Sho, is part of a theme naming together with his father Gou and Final Fight's Guy (Gai), as Akiman has implied he may have been influenced by the Getter Robo manga[6], likely referring to Getter Robo Go characters Sho Tachibana, Go Ichimonji and Gai Daido.
  • His father Gou makes his first official appearance in a game in Street Fighter 6, as part of one of Kimberly's memories where she fought him and was defeated.
