Street Fighter EX is a spin-off series of Street Fighter, consisting of 2D head-to-head fighting games with 3D graphics developed by Arika (which was founded by former Capcom employees) and published by Capcom (who allowed the main series characters for licensed use). The games features several Street Fighter characters alongside original characters created and owned by Arika. The first installment, released in November 1996, was the first game in the Street Fighter series to feature 3D graphics.

Gameplay[]

The Street Fighter EX fighting system uses fighting systems from the Street Fighter II and Street Fighter Alpha series, but also has some original ones. In many ways, EX still plays like a 2D fighting game, but the linear plane in which characters fight often changes along a 3D arena. The game uses special moves and super combos familiar or similar to previous games in the series. Unlike in the Street Fighter Alpha titles or Darkstalkers, the EX series features a super meter with three separate sections, not levels, which is unique to this spinoff game series.

Aside from throwing the opponent or wearing away their health by using special moves, a way to fight blocking is the "Guard Break". The Guard Break is a move that, if it connects with the blocking opponent, breaks the block and makes the opponent dizzy. The Guard Break can be used at any time with one level of the Super Combo gauge.[1] This is also a SF mechanic but in Alpha, the guard break simply results in an opening, while EX guard break is more like a stun.

A special move can be done after a regular move or another special move; this is called "Canceling". In the process of doing a Super Combo, another Super Combo can be performed. This is called "Super Canceling" and can be done with Super Combos. This allows a player to string multiple super combos together for monumental damage.

Development[]

Development of the first game was headed by Akira Nishitani, best known for his work on Street Fighter II.[2] Though the gaming media had widely perceived Capcom's first in-house polygonal fighting game, Star Gladiator, as a warm-up for their first polygonal Street Fighter game, Arika did not consult with the Star Gladiator team in making Street Fighter EX. Arika vice president Ichiro Mihara explained, "In specific terms, it's a different development line. In addition, technically, it's completely different. The know-how we're using for this 2D/3D fighting game has no relation to Star Gladiator. Fundamentally, Akira is not a subsidiary company of Capcom. ... Some people may be under the impression that as we came from Capcom, there's some sort of link between us but in reality it's a different team making a different game. The concept is new and the know-how is new."[2]

Legacy[]

Fighting Layer[]

Arika released a spin-off of Street Fighter EX in arcades, called Fighting Layer. The gameplay was very similar to the EX games, and even featured two of the EX characters (Allen Snider and Blair Dame), but was not an actual Street Fighter game, and was distributed by Namco.

Fighting EX Layer[]

On June 30th, 2011, Arika uploaded several screenshots for Fighting Sample, a demo fighting game with Kairi, Blair Dame, Hokuto, Shadowgeist and Doctrine Dark for the Nintendo 3DS in their official site.[3] On July 11th the same year, a footage featuring the demo appeared on YouTube.[4] The video showed a battle between Hokuto and Kairi as well as featuring reused sound effects. The game was one of Arika's ideas to Capcom for a new installment in the EX series.[5]

On April 1st, 2017, a video on YouTube [6] appeared showing Kairi, Garuda and Hokuto fighting in a 3D system. Arika passed it off as an April Fool.[7] Later it annouced that this project, named Fighting EX Layer, was really in development. It was released in June 2018 for the PlayStation 4. The game is not only the spiritual successor to the Street Fighter EX games and Fighting Layer but also the "evolution" of Fighting Sample.

Trivia[]

  • The storyline of the EX series takes place in an alternate timeline and is not canon to the official storyline of the main series.
  • Skullomania, one of Arika's characters, made a small cameo appearance in UDON's Street Fighter Legends: Sakura comic.
  • According to Arika's vice president Ichiro Mihara, there are no plans to include the Street Fighter EX fighters in Street Fighter V.[8] Instead, since September 2016 and onwards, all of the EX fighters were given profiles in the Shadaloo Combat Research Institute character guide.
    • A crossover collaboration with Akira resulted in Fighting EX Layer costumes for certain fighters in Street Fighter V for a limited time. Kairi for Ryu, Hokuto for Karin, Blair Dame for Cammy,[9] Skullomania for G[10] and Garuda for Akuma.
